Howard County Issues

Community and Voter Meetings

We have two opportunities this week to let our representatives know our positions on two items:
1) Our 1st amendment right to petition,
2) Adding density to Columbia that will cost countywide taxpayers dearly, long into the future.
Tomorrow at 9am on Friday Nov 13 at the County Circuit Court building in Ellicott City, a Howard County Circuit Court judge will hear resident's complaint regarding a Board of Elections action that will
a) keep third parties off the ballot,
b) disallow land use decisions to be placed on ballots for voter's decisions
c) circumvent our 1st amendment right in the US Constitution to petition.
Then, on Saturday the County Council will begin hearing citizen testimony on allowing a land developer to add 5500 residences and more than 12,000 people to one of the 10 Columbia villages, known as Downtown or Towne Center. The developer proposes no enforceable link to provide required infrastructure which is normally placed on the taxpayer's tab. Countywide taxpayers will receive the bill for this high level of density.
Two opportunities. Two ways to make a difference right here, locally where we can have the greatest impact to our communities. Hope to see you there.

P.S. Coalition for Columbia's Downtown held a very successful q&a meeting with 4 council members last week. Howard County Issues video taped and will be posting the most meaningful clips on the howardcountyissues.org site asap.
